How will I get the host guide?

Immediately after you register your dinner, you'll receive an email with the Host Guide, which includes everything you need to know about hosting a dinner. The email also includes a reminder of the details of your dinner and sample text to use when inviting guests. The day before your dinner, you will receive another email with the host guide again attached.

Do I have to come up with questions?

Nope! We provide you with a Host Guide that has 3 big questions that you'll ask the group. For each question, you'll give each guest equal time to share their answer. There’s nothing you need to do to prepare except read through the host guide.

Do I need to be an expert on the topic I choose?

Not at all! A Civic Dinner is a great place to come excited to learn. Everyone has experiences and perspectives they can share and we’re all bound to walk away with a new insight. 

Can anyone host?

Yes! All you have to do is figure out the time and place, and follow the host guide. You don't even need to host in your home. Restaurants are great venues for busy hosts! Your role is to give people the opportunity to have this conversation and follow the Host Guide.

Can anyone host a dinner from any conversation?

Some conversations are designed specifically for a certain city or region and the questions won't always make sense for people who aren't living in that community. We ask that you look for dinners in your region. You are prompted to type in your area and available conversations will appear. 

Do I have to invite guests?  How do I get guests?

We encourage hosts to reach out to their networks in search of a diverse group. We provide sample text you're welcome to use! If you list your dinner as ‘open’, people will be able to find your dinner by browsing the platform and our team will also point people to your dinner. Once your dinner's max guest capacity is reached, it will show up as 'full' on the platform.

Can I remove a guest if they tell me they can't make it?

Yes! If someone tells you they're not able to attend anymore, they can remove themselves from the guest list and so can you. Just go to the "my dinners" in the top right-hand corner of your page, find the dinner you're talking about and click 'change details.' See photo below :) Scroll down and check their name at the bottom under 'remove guests' and click submit. This way someone else is free to take their place. 

Am I in charge of communicating with guests pre and post-dinner?

Nope! We'll take care of communicating with your guests, if they RSVP via your dinner page. We automatically send out all the information to your guests after they sign up, reminders of the dinner, and a follow-up survey after the dinner. We just ask that you communicate any last minute changes to the dinner and list any specifics regarding food, parking, and accessibility in the notes of your dinner. 

What if I need to change the details of or cancel a dinner I'm hosting?

If you need to change the details or cancel your dinner, go to the "my dinners" in the top right-hand corner of your page, find the dinner you want to change  and click 'change details.' See photo above :) You will be able to make edits or cancel and any changes you make will prompt an automatic email to your guests notifying them of the change.  

What if I can't get anyone to register for my dinner?

We do recommend having at least 4 guests at each dinner. If you're in need of more guests, we ask that you first try recruiting more with our help and if you still don't have 4 guests 24 hrs before your dinner, we ask that you reschedule. 

How do we give our feedback?

Following your dinner, you will receive an email from Civic Dinners with a survey and more information about the topic of your dinner. Not only does Civic Dinners read the surveys, but we share feedback in a report to the partner of the conversation.

Can I bring a guest to the dinner who hasn't registered?

We ask that everyone wishing to attend a dinner register individually (with separate emails) so they are all kept up to date and can receive their own feedback survey. 

Why do I have to create an account?

In order for us to make sure you have the information you need and to receive the follow-up survey, you need to register via the platform. Creating a password also ensures the security of your information (phone, email, address). We also track our 'Civic Dinner Rockstars' so the more you attend & host, the sweeter the rewards!

Do I have to provide the full meal or pay for everyone at a restaurant?

No. There are a million ways to host a dinner and so many of them are at minimal cost to you. Say you choose to host at a restaurant, everyone can pay for their own meal so choose a place you would want to eat at :) OR if you're hosting at home, you could make it a potluck or ask everyone to chip in for a pizza! Feel free to get creative. The most important thing isn't the meal itself, it's that everyone is gathered in a space safe to share and connect.
